When God whispers in the noise

Do you ever wonder why it's hard to hear God in the hard times? When life is so full of noise, it's hard to spend time with Him and, if so, to enjoy it. When life is stressful and full of unanswered questions, why is it hard to hear truth? Why is it hard to hear God? Why is it hard to believe in His gentle, faithful love when life is painful?

"I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me up from the pit of [noise] and out of the [places of destruction].
He set my feet upon [a broad place], making my steps secure. . . ." Ps. 40:1-2

Life can get to be so hard that you stop listening to the voice of His love. Life can be weighed down with so much pressure that you stop thanking Him for His obvious and good gifts. You stop seeing them. His love seems to be put on mute.

When God removes the pressure, answers the questions, removes the thing(s) that was causing the noise, it's easier to hear Him, to stop and listen to Him, to believe Him again. Why is that? Why can't we seem to hear Him in the noise?

He knows the desires of our hearts and many times they are for good things, they are His gifts to us. But sometimes He lets us pursue the fulfillment of them for a while, only to take their seemingly obvious object of fulfillment away. Why? Why does He open doors a crack and give us a peek of what's on the other side, only to thrust them shut again? Why does He allow pain and heartbreak, the crushing of hopes and the crumbling of dreams?

"There are moments on our journey, following the Lord, when God illumines every step we take.
There are times when circumstances make perfect sense to us, as we try to understand each move
He makes. When the path grows dim, and our questions have no answers, turn to Him.

Bow the knee, trust the heart of your Father when the answers goes beyond what you can see.
Bow the knee, lift your heart to heaven and believe the One who holds eternity.
And when you don't understand the purpose of His plan, in the presence of the King, bow the knee.

There are days when clouds surround us and the rain begins to fall, and cold and lonely winds won't cease to blow.
And there seems to be no reason for suffering we feel; we are tempted to believe God does not know.
When the storms arise, don't forget we walk by faith and not by sight.

Bow the knee. Trust the heart of your Father when the answer goes beyond what you can see.
Bow the knee. Lift your eyes toward heaven and believe the One who holds eternity.
And when you don't understand the purpose of His plan, in the presence of the King, bow the knee."

He doesn't always explain Himself and He is in the process of weaving a story out of your life. We can't always see His story, the big picture of our life, the pattern being woven, the entire puzzle put together. We have to trust a God we cannot see with the strands of things we don't understand. We have to be willing to lift to Him the broken, messy, not pretty shards of broken hearts, hopes, and dreams and accept that these things are gifts from Him. He loves us so much with such a gentle and tender and faithful love. Accept whatever it is that doesn't make sense as a gift of love from a sovereign God who is not far away, but as close to you as the One who dwells in you - "Christ in you, the hope of glory." Hope for heaven, and the promised glory, the weight of which cannot be compared with these temporal, passing sufferings. Set your eyes on Him and things that are above and rejoice, for, 'The best is yet to come.' (Mr. Ten Boom)
